As an emerging scholar in the humanities the training I have attained thus far as well as the experience I’ve gained as an adjunct has shaped the framing of perspective I have as I plan my future contributions to the field of history. After writing on a very controversial issue as fraught as African American Confederate Non-combatants while in my M.A. program, I realized that my next project would be one where I could highlight efforts of African American cultural assertion. In examining African Americans who navigated through the antebellum period with some access to citizenship, their experience would shed light upon the common values, aspirations, culture and economic systems of a people relegated to the margins. My current education journey at the University of Nebraska Lincoln as a PhD track student provides the academic preparation needed to prepare my scholarly study.
